POPPIPIX is
photographer and actress Sara Kay, a native of upstate New York
now based in Los Angeles. Her grandparents' dog earred copy
of "The Best of LIFE" (Time, Inc. 1973)
introduced Sara to the art of photography and piqued her interest
in portraiture and the photo essay, inspiring her to chronicle
the efforts and antics of her high school boys' baseball team
for her first essay. With a degree in Political Science from
The State University of New York at Albany to "fall back
on", Sara's theatrical ambitions led her to the actors'
haven of Manhattan where she studied and performed Off-Off-Off
Broadway and in independent films. L.A. soon beckoned and Sara
moved west. As she crossed the country, camera in tow, signage
and water were subjects
of her next photo essays. In 2000, while on location in Brazil,
Sara's interest in photography reached a new level, and upon
returning to L.A., she began studying the photographic arts
at Santa Monica College. Today, Sara regularly shoots headshots
for actors and actresses and continues her documentary work
with a series devoted to men and women at work.
"I love the collaborative process that occurs
when photographing people, the energy and spontaneity of a shoot.
I strive to capture the pure moments when a subject is their
true self before the camera." -- SKR
Life, that's scarce a hundred years,
Holds millenniums of fears.
Brief its noon, and long its night:
Best then mingle dark with light.
Merry-making whiles ye may:
Wait not for another day.
Fools that treasure up their stock
After-generations mock.
Him that held a bond with fate
None may seek to emulate
--Nineteen Old Poems
(Eastern Han Dynasty, 25-220 A.C.)
